Michelle Obama reveals leaving the White House helped her marriage
The former United States first lady sat down with Oprah Winfrey in the latter’s “2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour” at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center last month. During the discussion, Michelle Obama shared various intimate details about her life as the first lady, a mother, and a wife, especially after they left the White House in early 2017.
While Mrs. Obama confirmed that they cried when they both saw their daughters leave for college, she joked about being thankful that “they’re gone.” On a serious note, Obama said the energy that she used to allot to looking after her daughters and her official duty for eight years can now be focused on herself and her next endeavors.
“It’s just me and him and Bo and Sunny and dinner,” Obama added. “Now I can look at him and recognize my husband, he’s still the man I fell in love with.”
Obama has been very adamant about not joining politics after her eight-year stint as a first lady, especially after being repeatedly asked about running for office for the 2020 elections. However, the author of the best-selling book “Becoming” reiterated her high regard for the job she fulfilled as the first lady. “It was the biggest privilege of my life to serve as this nation’s first lady,” Obama said echoing her final speech as the FLOTUS in 2017.
Michelle Obama: Why she does not follow her daughters on social media
On the same tour, Michelle Obama also spoke about giving her daughters space while they are in college to the point of not monitoring them on social media. Malia Obama, 21, is attending Harvard University while Sasha Obama, 18, reportedly enrolled at the University of Michigan last year. However, Mrs. Obama has her own way of checking on her daughters online and that is with the help of family friends who she and Barack Obama have mentored.
